Finding the right HSN/SAC code is only one part of GST billing. When your business handles daily orders, invoices, inventory, payment collection, field sales teams and Tally/Busy entries, SalesOn helps you manage everything in one connected platform.
Type a product or service name into the search box, such as "soap", "courier" or "readymade garments", or enter an HSN/SAC code if you already know part of it. You can narrow results further using the category, type and GST rate filters on the left.
Once you find a likely match, click on the result card to open the detail panel. It shows the CGST/SGST/IGST split and a ready-to-use invoice line. From there you can copy the code, copy the GST rate, copy a full invoice line, or send the item straight into SalesOn's GST Invoice Generator or Quotation Generator.
HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature, an internationally accepted system for classifying physical goods. Under GST, every product you sell is mapped to an HSN code, which in turn determines the applicable GST rate on your invoice. Businesses above certain turnover thresholds are required to mention HSN codes on tax invoices.
SAC stands for Services Accounting Code, used to classify services rather than physical goods under GST. If your business raises invoices for transport, courier, advertising, software, repair, warehousing or other services, you will use a SAC code instead of an HSN code on those invoice lines.
HSN/SAC codes tell the GST system exactly what is being sold, which in turn determines the correct CGST, SGST or IGST rate to charge. Getting the code wrong can lead to incorrect tax being charged, mismatches during GST return filing, and queries from buyers or auditors. Mentioning the right code consistently also makes it easier to reconcile sales data, claim input tax credit correctly, and stay audit-ready as your business scales.
| Aspect | HSN | SAC |
|---|---|---|
| Used for | Physical goods / products | Services |
| Stands for | Harmonised System of Nomenclature | Services Accounting Code |
| Typical examples | Soap, biscuits, fabric, electronics | Transport, courier, software, advertising |
| Where it appears | Goods line items on a GST invoice | Service line items on a GST invoice |
Both code types serve the same purpose under GST: identifying what is being billed so the correct tax rate is applied consistently across invoices, returns and audits.
Because GST rates and classifications are revised from time to time through CBIC notifications and GST Council decisions, always confirm a code and rate before billing, especially for high-value or recurring invoices. A few simple habits help:
Free reference tools and spreadsheets work well when you are billing a handful of invoices a month. As order volumes grow, manually looking up HSN/SAC codes, recalculating GST, and copying details between Excel, WhatsApp and Tally starts costing real time and introduces errors. If your team raises GST invoices daily, manages a sales force on the field, tracks stock across locations, or needs payment follow-ups alongside billing, a connected platform like SalesOn's GST invoicing software removes the repetitive lookup work and keeps invoicing, inventory and collections in sync, including a direct Tally integration.
Use these free tools together to handle the full order-to-payment cycle without switching software.
